It’s that time of year in northern Michigan where shanties vanish, the thaw begins and MFM Sport Fishing kicks off the charter season! This winter was particularly brutal between record setting snowfall, icy roads and bitter cold temps. Despite the challenging conditions, fishing must go on! I take this time to reflect on all the great people I had the chance to meet on the ice this winter and start planning MFM Sport Fishing’s open water charter services for spring, summer and fall.
KENTUCKY “BURBOT”
Reflecting on this year’s ice fishing season, there is one memorable experience that reminds me how much I enjoy being a fishing guide and captain. This winter, I had the privilege to take customers from Kentucky ice fishing. They had never been ice fishing before or for that matter, stepped foot on an icy lake. While fishing and chatting about the various freshwater fish, they mentioned they always wanted to see a burbot. I will let you guess what happened next…yup, they coincidentally caught a burbot! Burbot are not an anglers desired catch but they are pretty neat to look at. They are a cross between a catfish and an eel, almost serpent like. Nonetheless, multiple firsts for this couple during their MFM Sport Fishing trip and I was glad to witness.
CHARTER SEASON 2019
I am looking forward seeing returning customers and meeting new customers this charter season. It is great to be apart of annual family vacations or the main reason for planning a northern Michigan trip.
